CELEBRATE TENNESSEE WILLIAMS' 100th BIRTHDAY

A month-long series of events are planned to recognize the important contributions of this legendary writer and Key West resident of 36 years.
THE TENNESSEE WILLIAMS IN KEY WEST EXHIBIT
Available free of charge to the public at 513 Truman Avenue from 10 am to 4 pm daily. The exhibit includes photos of Williams at home in Key West with his partner, friends and his beloved dogs, original playbills, and a typewriter used by Williams while working in Key West. Also included are original posters of local productions of his plays, books of poetry and plays, vintage magazines featuring interviews and articles about the writer and much more.
Poetry Contest - Deadline March 14
Poets are invited to submit a 30 line poem related to Tennessee Williams' life and work in Key West. Registration and submission of the poem may be mailed to: Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration, KWAHS, 281 Front St. Key West, Fl 33040. A registration fee of $10 is required. Checks may be made out to: KWAHS. The final day to register and submit a poem is March 14- envelopes must be postmarked no later than March 14th. Three local respected poets will serve as judges and will select the two winning poems. The first place winner will be awarded $300; the second place winner $150. The winners will be announced and asked to read their poems at the March 27 reception detailed below. Poems will be returned to contestants at this time. Connie Gilbert, Poet and Writer, is managing the Poetry Contest.
Artists' Challenge - March 19
Artists are invited to paint the home bought by Tennessee Williams at 1431 Duncan Street in 1947 and owned until his death in 1983. Following the Williams pattern of completing a painting in a few hours, the artists will begin painting at 10 am and complete their work by 1 pm at the site of the home on March 19. A 9" x 12" hard canvas and/or watercolor paper will be provided upon arrival at the site and collected at 1 pm. Any medium will be accepted and artists must supply their own materials. Registration and payment of $10 fee must be at site between 9:30 - 10:00 am.
Three local respected artists will serve as judges. The first place winner will be awarded $300; the second place winner $150. Winners will be announced at the March 27 reception detailed below. All completed entries will be on exhibit for a month, March 27 - April 30, at the Fort East Martello Museum. Paintings will be returned to the artists at the end of the exhibit. Reception - March 27
A reception honoring the 100th birthday of Tennessee Williams and his life in Key West will be held at Fort East Martello Museum, 3501 S. Roosevelt Blvd. on Sunday, March 27 from 5 pm to 7 pm An exhibit of all the paintings of his house done on March 19 during the Artists' Challenge will be on display. The winners of the Poetry Contest will be announced and they will read their poems. There will be an open bar and light refreshments. To attend the reception a fee of $10 will be charged at the door. Entry is free to KWAHS members.
