December Art Camp Offers Kids a Multi-Cultural Focus
Special holiday sessions of ArtCamp2004 for students in Grades 1 through 6, scheduled during the last two weeks of December, will explore the multi-cultural traditions of how the season is celebrated around the world.
Offered by the Key West Art & Historical Society and taught by professional art educator, Mrs. Anika Wong, the classes will run from 10 a.m. to 12:30 at Fort East Martello Museum in two weekly sessions: Dec. 20, 21, and 22 and again on Dec. 27, 28 and 29.
Students may sign up by the week or by the day, but class size is limited to 12 students, said Suzanne Pereira, education coordinator for the Society.
Mrs. Wong, an elementary school art teacher from Orlando who taught classes during the regular summer session of ArtCamp2004, will provide hands-on experience in construction of Mexican tin ornaments, hand-painted Christmas paper, fabric arts and some open-air painting at the fort. Students also will use art, stories and music to discover how the holidays are celebrated in other parts of the world, including experimenting with painting techniques that simulate fireworks and utilizing images of dragons, a symbol of the Chinese New Year.
"This is the third time the Society's popular art camp has offered classes during the Christmas holiday vacation period," Pereira said. "Last year's program filled quickly, and this year we have a lot of interesting, fun projects planned."
The cost of one three-day weekly session is $65 per student. Individual classes are $30 per student, per class. Members of the Art & Historical Society receive discounts beginning with 10 percent off for an individual class
Payment must be made in advance at the time of registration and can be by cash, check or Visa, MasterCard or American Express credit card.
Registration forms are available on line at the Society's website at www.KWAHS.com or by calling Pereira at 305-295-6616, ext. 27 or emailing to spereira@kwahs.org.
