Claudia Pennington, CEO of the Key West Art and Historical Society, recently announced that the Custom House’s historic Dade County pine staircase is going to be refinished. The funding, in part, comes from matching grants from the Tourist Development Council’s brick and mortar account. “Thousands of people have walked these stairs since our opening in 1999,” Pennington said. “We have chosen Classic Wood Floors for the restoration because they have a background in historic renovation and paying attention to details.” Zoltan Boros, president of the company, said he learned the old European technique while working in Hungary and other countries. “We are using a high-grade finish used by museums in England,” Boros said. “The first coat is oil based and then there are three applications of water based finish. It stands up to all the foot traffic in European museums.”
