Sauer Exhibit and Sale

A collection of nearly two hundred drawings and watercolor paintings by the late Martha Sauer will be displayed and available for purchase at East Martello Museum from March 20th to March 30th. A wine and cheese reception from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. will mark the final day of the exhibit.
Sauer came to Key West in 1936, when the city’s economy was recovering from the Great Depression. She had been intrigued by Key West watercolors by Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) artist Avery Johnson and decided to travel there. Ms. Sauer captured Key West scenes in dozens of her watercolor paintings and drawings. Her travels throughout Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean provided more inspiration for her outdoor landscapes of country markets, dusty back roads, and native vegetations.
“Martha Sauer represented a Key West cultural development that began with the imported artists during the Depression years and influenced virtually every artist now producing in our community,” said Key West Art & Historical Society Executive Director Claudia Pennington.
Today, her works hang in private collections in Switzerland, Japan, Great Britain, Canada and the US.
Call Key West Art & Historical Society Norman Aberle for details at 295-6616, ext. 14.
