The Key West Art & Historical Society invites the public to become a part of Key West history by participating in a major beautification project. The “Path of Friends” brick walkway, located in the back of the Custom House, will be receiving an extensive renovation. The existing walkway is composed of bricks purchased through the “Path of Friends Program” and is inscribed with names, dates, symbols and event commemorations per the buyer’s wishes. In order to facilitate the new project, these pavers will be removed and stored for later reinstallation. Then the entire area will be landscaped and bricked by Details Landscaping Design. When completed in early winter of 2007, the area will be transformed into a park setting, complete with outdoor lighting, an irrigation system and benches to provide seating for lingering visitors. “In addition to refurbishing the brick pathway, we’ll be incorporating historic granite markers that will provide a timeline of significant Key West events, ending at an existing marker that commerates the opening of the Custom House in 1999,” said KWAHS Program Director Gerri Sidoti. “Essentially, ‘The Path of Friends’ will become ‘The Pathway to History.’” These new granite markers and benches will also be available for purchase and inscription. Sidoti noted that there is still space for original brick purchases as well. Bricks are $55 each, granite markers are $600 each, and granite benches are $1500. “The idea of this project is to give our casual visitors an introduction to Key West history,” said KWAHS Curator Norman Aberle. This project is made possible through the generous support of the Grumbacher Family, Bert Whitt, Dennis Beaver, Alexander Baer, Ken Weschler and John Mumford.
