The Second Annual Fabulous Fur Ball, a benefit for the Florida Keys SPCA, was a dazzling sold-out success, raising approximately $60,000.00 for the organization. Held Thursday, January 26, at East Martello Museum, the evening featured live entertainment, visits with the Key West Pet Psychic, gourmet hors d' oeuvres by Small Chef at Large, a cat box treasure hunt and the much anticipated crowning of Fur Ball '06 King and Queen. Once again, the generosity of the Florida Keys art's community was demonstrated by a splendid array of live and silent auction offerings, whose sale raised over $17,000.00. The King and Queen Critter Competition raised approximately $27,000.00, with the much coveted capes and hand-crafted Crowns of King and Queen awarded to the largest fundraisers: King Bubba, pet companion to Tito and Nita Bigelow, and Queen Tiny, a resident of the FKSPCA, sponsored by Janet Sneath. The titles of canine royal court '06 were awarded to the runner-up fundraisers: Prince Gizmo, pet companion to Oliver Blake; Duke Michael, pet companion to Sally Thompson; Princess Madeline, pet companion to John and Karen Nazarro; and Duchess Steffi, pet companion to Karen Prince. Fur Ball '05 King Schumann, and Queen Angel relinquished their titles and received tributes to honor their year's service to the SPCA. The ultimate goal of the FKSPCA Shelter is to raise $2 - 3.5 million to build a state-of-the-art pet shelter that will withstand a category 5 hurricane. The present shelter is clean, and the animals well cared for, but because it floods during tropical storms, all of the animals must be evacuated and fostered out. Those wishing to make a donation to the shelter, or to inquire about promoting their pet companion for Fur Ball King/Queen '07 should call the FKSPCA at 305-294-4857.
