Guest curator, Nance Frank will lead a tour of the Mario Sanchez exhibit, “Listening to Our Ancestors”. Ms. Frank will discuss the importance and ethical foundation of Sanchez’s work, unique among folk artists for his depictions of racial and religious harmony. “What makes Sanchez paintings so charming,” said Ms. Frank, “are the funny details. There are tiny jokes or ‘encantos’ as they are called in Spanish, in every painting.” In this painting entitled “The Blind Sharks” a closer look at the two “blind” men on the left reveals they are actually rump watchers. Join Nance Frank at the Custom House, Thursday, April 7, 2005 at 7pm, when she will share many more encantos of Mario Sanchez. Complimentary wine and soft drinks will be served.
