Wolkowski Dollhouse Refurbished

by Donna Smith

East Martello Museum’s historic Dollhouse has brand new front steps. Termite and flood water-damaged wood will be replaced and a fresh coat of paint will welcome new visitors of all ages, thanks to the generous support of David Wolkowski.
The green-shuttered wood-frame structure, built in the early 1900’s was donated to the Key West Art & Historical Society in 1960 and has served as a junior museum with antique toys, dolls and other items of interest to children.
The Wolkowski family has contributed to the Dollhouse upkeep for several years. David’s sisters Ruth Wolkowski Greenfield and the late Edna Wolkowski spent countless hours playing with neighborhood children in the 100 square foot structure when it stood in the Gato family yard at Duval and South Street.
East Martello Museum has received its share of flood waters in the past hurricane seasons. Now sitting high and dry on concrete blocks, this unique and valuable piece of Key West history continues to draw both children and adult visitors.
