Hammered Turtles at East Martello?

A room full of children with hammers might spell trouble, the addition of safety goggles, ceramic tiles and glue spells fun as ArtCamp continues.

Last week at Fort East Martello museum found third and fourth graders happily transforming pieces of tile into mosaic sea turtles. Individual artistic styles emerged as some wielded hammers with abandon, while others chose a more cautious approach. On hand to make sure only tiles got hit were Suzanne Peirera of the Key West Art & Historical Society and artist Jennifer Blomberg.

As glue was passed around, Ms. Peirera questioned eager artists what they should keep in mind before continuing. “Composition” chimed an enthusiastic chorus ready to put this reminder to use. Before long colorful mosaic sea turtles were taking shape as artists mulled what color tile to glue on next. Perched on the side lines were rows of Seminole Indian puppets created earlier in the week.
