Outsider Art - Inside East Martello

The spirit of folk art filled Fort East Martello this summer as ArtCampers embarked on creating sculptures from found objects. Suzanne Pereira, Education Coordinator of the Key West Art & Historical Society led the students on a tour of Stanley Papio’s folk art sculptures pointing out the magic of outsider art; with no formal training Papio had done just what his imagination dictated.

Following Papio’s example, the young artists quickly began to see spatulas as heads, forks as arms, or pots, pans and cookie tins as torsos. With only technical limitations, many of those overcome with assistance from Pereira and artist Jennifer Blomberg, the room buzzed with creative energy as imagination transformed into art.

That week’s activities included abstract sculpture, found object sculpture based on artist Stanley Papio and culminated in 3-D tunnels books based on the artwork of Mario Sanchez. An exhibition of student artwork will be held at the Fort East Martello Museum August 20, 2005 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
