The Key West Art & Historical Society is currently registering students for ArtCamp 2005. Classes will begin June 6, 2005 with eight sessions running through July 29th. All classes are held in the air-conditioned studios at Fort East Martello Museum and Gardens located at 3501 South Roosevelt Boulevard. Classes run Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and are offered by grade level. Grades 1 - 4 kick off the summer session during the month of June, Grades 5 and 6 are held in July. A wide variety of classes are offered, including puppet making, pinhole photography, folk art sculpture and painting, jewelry and kite making and more. Classes are taught by professional teachers and artists. The program focuses on the Society’s extensive folk art collection, much of it exhibited at East Martello. Amid the inspirational works of Mario Sanchez and Stanley Papio students will be encouraged to study these artists works and be assisted in creating their own. As part of the program, students will tour the folk art exhibit “Listening to Our Ancestors” by Mario Sanchez, currently on exhibit at the Custom House. A special pinhole photography class will be offered this year. Students will explore the history and architectural features of Fort East Martello Museum and capture its atmosphere of mystery through this unique medium. Each one-week session is $130 per child, $117 for KWAHS members. Registration must be accompanied by full payment. Fees cover all materials. Key West Art and Historical Society awarded 25 scholarships to elementary school students in 2005. Scholarship includes a full week of classes and all supplies. This popular program is made possible through the sponsorship of TIB Bank of the Keys, Harpoon Harry’s Restaurant, Blue Heaven Restaurant, Key West Cultural Preservation Society/Sunset Celebration and Publix Supermarket as well as continuing donations from members of the Key West Art & Historical Society.
