FYI - COAST GUARD CUTTER BARBARA MABRITY
docked in Trumbo Point – April 28-30

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Barbara Mabrity (WLM 559) was named after the lighthouse keeper that maintained the Key West Lighthouse from 1826 until 1864, enduring three hurricanes and the loss of five of her children when the lighthouse crumbled during the 1846 hurricane. She retired at the age of 82 and later died in 1867.
The ship is a 175-foot Coast Buoy Tender, home-ported in Mobile, Ala. The crew's responsibilities include servicing and repairing aids to navigations and environmental response along the Gulf Coast.
(The Coast Guard is not allowing tours at this time, but the ship can be viewed from shore.)

Coat Of Arms for the USCGC Barbara Mabrity (WLM 559)

MOTTO - inscribed SEMPER SPERO’ (Always Hopeful).
SHIELD - Red, white and blue are the colors traditionally used by the Coast Guard. The lozenge, heraldic symbol for womanhood, signifies Mrs. Barbara Mabrity, the 19th century lighthouse keeper at Key West for 38 years. The polestar represents the cutter’s navigational services. The trident symbolizes the cutter’s mission of marine environmental protection and maritime law enforcement, while the oar suggests search and rescue. The buoy highlights the operational duties as the ninth vessel of the Keeper Class Coastal Buoytenders.
CREST - The storm clouds, lighthouse and ocean waves denote the most destructive hurricane of KeyWest history. That storm, in 1846, sank three ships and destroyed the lighthouse, killing fourteen people taking refuge there. The beams represent Mrs. Mabrity’s dedication to service to “maintain the light”; she retired in 1864 at the age of 82. The branches of Southern longleaf Pines, the state tree of Alabama, symbolize the home port of the Cutter.

The new Coast Buoy Tender was launched by Marinette Marine Corporation of Marinette, Wisconsin.

KWAHS Visits Flagler Museum

Lee Garrison, Vice President of KWAHS Board of Directors, arranged for a visit to the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach on March 10th. David Harrison Wright, President of the KWAHS board, Lee and Claudia Pennington, Executive Director of KWAHS spent several hours touring the museum and Henry Flagler’s personal railcar - Railcar 91. (Pictured left is Claudia Pennington and Lee Garrison in front of Railcar 91.)
The purpose of the trip was to identify some of the photographs, documents and artifacts that could be loaned to KWAHS for the new exhibition Speedway to Sunshine, Florida’s Ocean Railway. "John Blades, Director of the Flagler Museum, is supporting the development of our exhibition," said Pennington, "and we look forward to some real treasures from this important museum."

Garrison, Wright and Pennington also met with Seth Bramson, America’s senior collector of Florida East Coast Railway materials. He guided them through his huge collection and is enthusiastically supporting KWAHS’s exhibition with both his collection and his expertise. He is the author of 16 books and more than 60 articles on Florida transportation history.

The exhibition will open at the Custom House on January 22, 2011, exactly 99 years to the day that Henry Flagler’s railroad arrived in Key West. KWAHS is planning an entire year of events and programs to culminate in 2012 for the 100th anniversary.

Nance Frank Slated as KWAHS Volunteer of the Year

KWAHS honored Nance Frank as their volunteer of the year on Friday Jan. 22, at the ninth annual Unsung Heroes luncheon held at the Marriot Beachside in Key West. The Luncheon is sponsored by the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK).

“Nance Frank has many talents,” noted Claudia Pennington, Executive Director of the Key West Art & History Society, “Her knowledge of fine art and her love of maritime history make her an unparalleled volunteer for KWAHS. Last year she curated the Mario Sanchez Centennial exhibition and gave gallery tours to help visitors appreciate the history and beauty of old Key West through Mario’s eyes.”

KWAHS is among the 76 Monroe County Charitable nonprofit organizations taking part in the Unsung Heroes luncheon which is made possible by the Foundation’s Very Important Partners in Paradise whose annual support helps underwrite the CFFK activities and programs. This event provides an opportunity to honor those who have answered the call of volunteerism. “The Community Foundation is proud to sponsor this annual event,” says Dianna Sutton, president and CEO of the CFFK. “On behalf of the non-profit community, the board of governors of the CFFK extend our gratitude for all these wonderful volunteers who have made valuable contributions of their time, energy and talents, expecting nothing in return. Our lives are greatly enhanced by their call to service.”

Fine Art Auction held at Fort East Martello Museum

The Anne McKee Fine Art Auction, conducted by renowned New Hampshire auctioneer Charlie Bailey Gates, took place Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Fort East Martello Museum 3501 S. Roosevelt Blvd., Key West.

For twelve consecutive years, the Anne McKee Artists’ Fund fine art auction has drawn a full house.
This annual event is unique among Keys fine art auctions because it is supported by artists with the sole purpose of benefiting artists. Knowing and understanding the needs of local artists, Anne McKee and a group of like-minded associates orchestrated the auction and the fund. Artists participating in the auction receive 50% of the amount realized on the sale of their pieces. The remaining 50% supports the fund that awards yearly grants to help artists. These grants are coveted not only because the funds help bring artistic aspirations into being, but also because of the resulting recognition and visibility.

Cataloging Begins For New Exhibit

In preparation for “Speedway to Sunshine, Florida’s Overseas Railroad” KWAHS is beginning a detailed cataloging of its vintage clothing collection. Most of these items were accessioned in 1987 and only brief notes accompanied the clothing. In our new exhibit we plan to feature changing examples of what the citizens of Key West would have worn for the arrival of Flagler’s Railroad. read more >>

NEW AT THE LIGHTHOUSE

Everyone knows you can see the best view of Key West from the top of the Lighthouse. Unfortunately, not everyone can climb the 88 steps to the top. Bert Whitt and Dennis Beaver donated vintage wicker chairs which are paired with a television donated by Roger and Mary Ann Westerlund to make our historic site more accessible. Our new DVD “Burning through Time, the Key West Lighthouse Story” will be available for those visitors who prefer a virtual tour from a comfortable seat in the Lens Room.
