Custom House Wins Florida Monthly’s “Best of Florida Award”
The subscribers and readers of Florida Monthly magazine’s 11th annual Best of Florida Awards have named the Custom House in Key West the “Best Renovated Building” in the state. Florida Monthly asks its readers to vote for their favorite in each category and to return their ballots by a set deadline. The results appear in the September issue of the magazine. President and Publisher of Florida Monthly Doug Cifers notified Claudia Pennington, CEO of the Custom House, of the award in a letter. “The votes have been counted and the winners in 126 categories have been named,” he wrote. “Your dedication to excellence has attracted enough attention from our readers to name you the Best of Florida.” Monroe County businesses and museums received 15 awards from the magazine, including Best Community College, FKCC; Best Places to Watch Sunset, Mallory Square; Best Restaurant with a View, Sundowners, Key Largo; Best Cheeseburger, Margaretville; Best Guided Tour, Conch Tour Train. |
Key West Art & Historical Society receives three state grants
The Key West Art and Historical Society recently received three grants totaling more than $100,000 from the State of Florida to help continue its funding of educational programs in the Keys and art exhibitions. Claudia Pennington, CEO of the society, said, “We were given a $44,447 grant for general program support, and a second grant for $35,000 is being used for new exhibits at the Key West Lighthouse and Keepers Quarters." The Florida Division of Cultural Affairs gave the society a grant for $28,728 to support its exhibits and associated program, such as lectures. “This grant allows us to feature local artists, such as our November exhibition of Bill Welch’s work entitled "Here, There and Back Again" and bring in the works of artists our residents would have to travel outside of the Keys to view,” Pennington said.
